When we think of health and wellness in the modern world, we’re often alluding to frivolous self-care tools and treatments. But, achieving better health doesn’t have to be as complicated or expensive as we’re led to believe. Plus, it also doesn’t mean you have to set out with the mindset of achieving any unrealistic goals (e.g., cutting out sugar entirely or never touching alcohol again). You can start taking small steps in your day-to-day that add up to significant lifestyle changes in the long run. There’s no reason to wait until the New Year or even Monday to take charge of your well-being. Learn how to improve your overall health with these four strategies.

Steps to Improve Overall Health and Wellness

The following health tips will teach you small changes that can make a big difference in your overall well-being.

Eat Mindfully

Mindful eating helps us improve our relationship with food and puts us at much less severe risk for debilitating diseases, high blood pressure, and heart disease. It takes time and practice to alter our eating habits, but it’s well worth the payoff. Diabetes is the seventh leading cause of death in the US, and 90 percent of those with this condition are overweight or obese. Sticking to healthy eating habits also reduces constant cravings, and ultimately minimizes your intake of chemically-altered, bad-for-you food.

A common misconception is that eating well means sticking to boring chicken and vegetable meals day-in and day-out. Often, adjusting our diets means merely making a few healthier substitutions. There are so many different ways to incorporate nutrient-dense food into a tasty meal. Experiment with different vegetables and fruits to find what you like. For example, grated cauliflower and broccoli make excellent substitutes for rice. They can even mimic a pizza, piece of toast, or mashed potatoes! If you’re looking for a more traditional starchy food, opt for whole-grain carbohydrates over their white counterparts. Also, lean, skinless meat is a better choice over fatty beef and pork.

Exercise Regularly

The thought of joining a gym is unappealing to many, but regular exercise has to be an essential part of your health regime. Staying active helps you burn calories and build muscle, but it also contributes to plenty of other health benefits unrelated to weight loss. Regular exercise improves bone density, lowers cholesterol, increases brain health and memory, and stabilizes blood pressure. It also increases energy levels, which is a significant feat as we age. Studies show that leisure-time physical activity can extend life expectancy by up to four and a half years, so find something you like and get moving! Instead of driving, walk or bike to your destination. Sign up for a class you enjoy. Run around with your children more. You can also try onboarding your friends so that you don’t have to go about your efforts alone. Plus, then you can base some of your social events around healthier activities.

Adopt a Relaxation Technique

With the amount of pressure we face from our jobs, financial struggles, health burdens, etc., it’s no wonder the average American is under more stress now than ever before. Stress has a correlation to both our physical and mental health, which is why it’s crucial we spend time calming our minds. Many opt for meditation, yoga, and other relaxation techniques. The good news is this can be as structured as you’d like it to be. Some prefer to attend a class with guided relaxation. Others choose to unwind in the comfort of their own home. Whatever your preference may be, give yourself at least 10 minutes a day to de-stress. Find somewhere comfy to sit or lie down, close your eyes, and focus on your breath. For just a few short minutes, don’t fixate on the stresses of your life.

Others may prefer a more hands-on approach to managing stress levels. When that’s the case, we recommend finding an activity that allows you to exert your stress healthily. Perhaps, it will be a physical activity such as playing a sport or going for a run. Others may choose an outlet such as drawing, reading, or writing. Take time to explore other avenues if what you’re doing isn’t working for you.

Maintain Healthy Relationships

The relationships we hold with the people in our lives can significantly improve our overall health. Adults with a lack of strong relationships are at a 50 percent higher risk of premature death. So, even though life may get busy, we can’t make a habit of placing our loved ones on the backburner. Make time for your friends, even if that means meeting up once every other month. Leave your work at the office, so you have more time with your family at home.

It’s also important to be mindful of the relationships we keep. Are certain friends or family members enabling your tension? Of course, some stress is inevitable, e.g., an elderly member of your family struggling with an illness. But, in the instances where you are butting heads constantly, it could be best to pull away from this relationship. We should seek cheerful, positive influences who advocate for our well-being.
