In a world where skincare treatments are so popular, it can be difficult to keep up with the latest trends and understand which one might actually work for you. If you’re looking for a minimally invasive way to enhance your skin, one treatment you may want to consider is a chemical peel. Keep reading to learn what is a chemical peel, how it works, its benefits, and more.

How a Chemical Peel Works

A chemical peel is a skincare procedure used to improve your skin’s appearance. It’s most commonly performed on the face but can also be performed on the hands and neck. At the beginning of the procedure, your skin is thoroughly cleansed to remove oil and dirt. Then, a chemical solution is applied to the skin to remove damaged skin cells.

The solution will consist of different ingredients based on its type, but as the American Society of Plastic Surgery notes, it will likely contain glycolic acid, trichloroacetic acid, salicylic acid, lactic acid, or carbolic acid. After the procedure, you’ll notice that over the next couple of days, the top outer layer of your skin will start to peel away, revealing smoother skin underneath.

Types of Chemical Peels

Chemical peels are classified based on the intensity of the chemicals they’re made of and how deep they penetrate your skin. The three main types are light, medium, and deep. Light peels, also called superficial peels, are the most mild and only remove the outer layer of your skin. Medium peels, on the other hand, penetrate the middle layer of your skin, and deep peels penetrate the lower middle layer. Recovery times for medium or deep chemical peels are generally longer, while there is little to no downtime for superficial ones.

Why They’re Done

Chemical peels offer various benefits and can help:

  • Treat acne
  • Treat sun or age spots
  • Reduce pore size
  • Diminish wrinkles and fine lines
  • Soothe scarring
  • Target discoloration
  • Lift skin
  • Improve skin texture

Side Effects of Treatment

While chemical peels can make you feel great, make your skin shine, and are safe,  there are potential side effects while your skin heals. These can include:

  • Skin temporarily more sensitive to sun exposure
  • Changes in skin color
  • Cold sores (if you are prone)
  • Redness and swelling
  • Scabbing
  • Scarring

Infections are also a risk but are generally rare. Your doctor may prescribe you with an antiviral medication to help prevent this. You can use home remedies, like cool compresses, or over-the-counter remedies to help with other side effects, but you should always discuss with your doctor before doing so.

Is a Chemical Peel Right for You?

Chemical peels aren’t for everyone, so it’s crucial to talk to your doctor before proceeding with treatment. In general, they aren’t recommended for those who take isotretinoin, have a history of keloids or unusual scarring, or are pregnant.
