Did you know that millions of Americans are impacted by mental health conditions? In fact, one in five American adults experiences mental illness over the course of a year. Mental health is an essential component of our overall wellbeing, yet it’s frequently overlooked. To help you manage and improve your mental health, Supro Direct has compiled a list of seven habits to improve mental health and mindfulness.
How to Support and Boost Your Mental Health
Whether you suffer from mental illness or simply are looking for ways to improve your overall wellbeing, incorporate some of the following habits into your daily routine. In time, you should see an overall improvement in mood, self-esteem, and mental health.
Develop a regular exercise routine.
Have you ever felt energized after an intense workout? That’s because your body releases endorphins during a workout, which interact with your brain’s receptors to minimize your body’s perception of pain and squash negative moods.
Research has proven that regular exercise is particularly beneficial to our mental health as it reduces feelings of anxiety and depression, as well as improves cognitive function, self-esteem, and sleep.
Volunteer or help others.
When you’re feeling down, it can be easy to focus on life’s negatives. Instead, redirect your energy into a volunteer opportunity. Being helpful and serving others will give you a sense of purpose and may even present opportunities to build relationships with new people. There are hundreds of volunteer opportunities in every city, so identify something you’re passionate about– whether it be animals, children, human rights, senior citizens, or healthcare– and sign up for an upcoming event or recurring service.
Keep a gratitude journal.
Another great way to combat mental illness is by keeping a gratitude journal. Try regularly writing down things you’re grateful for or that bring you joy. By hitting pause and taking a step back to focus on all of the positives in your life, you can reset your emotions and look at life from a different perspective.
Medical research suggests social relationships can not only improve your mental wellbeing, but they can also increase your lifespan. Make an effort to socialize with friends, family, neighbors, and coworkers in order to build a network of people you can turn to cope with problems and celebrate successes.
Consider your diet.
Food has a direct impact on your wellbeing, so take a hard look at your diet to ensure your body and brain are getting all of the necessary nutrients. Try incorporating more fruits, vegetables, whole grains, fish, nuts, legumes, and water into your diet to support your brain and mental health. Be sure to minimize alcohol and caffeine consumption, as these substances can alter your mood and leave you feeling anxious or depressed.
Get on a regular sleep schedule.
Sleep is a critical part of not only your bodily health but also your mental health. In fact, those suffering from sleep deprivation frequently experience increased effects of their psychiatric disorders, as well as impaired emotional regulations and cognitive thinking. Establishing a regular sleep schedule and bedtime routine will help you keep symptoms of mental illness under control, and keep your brain sharp.
If you struggle to fall or stay asleep, try putting your electronics away several hours before bed to decompress and clear your mind, or starting to exercise regularly.
Don’t be afraid to ask for help.
Finally, don’t be afraid to ask for help when you need it. If you feel like your mental health is impacting your daily life, consider seeking professional help. A medical professional can help you identify coping techniques that work for you, and also prescribe psychiatric medication if necessary.
